Abstract
Introduction: The present study aimed at predicting the problematic smartphone use in young adolescents based on the dimensions of temperament and character with the intervening variable of interpersonal sensitivity.
Method: To this end, 385 young adolescents (207 females and 178 male) were selected using available sampling in Tehran and were asked to answer the abridged Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-56), Boyce and Parker Interpersonal Sensitivity Questionnaire and Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS).
Results: Two hypothetical models were tested in the study: in the first model, the interpersonal sensitivity mediated the effects of temperament factors on problematic smartphone use; and the second model was based on character factors. Recruiting fitness indices, evaluation of the hypothetical models revealed that both models, if modified, would gain momentum fit. In the model of temperament factors, innovation and persistence had a direct effect, and harm avoidance and dependence reward had an indirect effect on problematic smartphone use, respectively. In the character model, cooperation had a direct effect and self-directedness had both direct and indirect effects on problematic smartphone use.
Conclusion: Overall, the results revealed that the personality factors of temperament and character could predict the problematic smartphone use in young adolescents through the mediation of interpersonal sensitivity. Supporting the hypothetical research models for problematic smartphone use, findings of the study provide a suitable framework for the pathology of this common phenomenon in young adolescents.
