Diabetes Self Management: Social, Demographical and Disease Factors

Introduction: This study aimed to investigated diabetes self management differences based on sex, marriage status, educational level, job status, incomes, insurances, life network, diabetes duration, treatment type, disease severity, smoking and age.
Method: No. of 500 outpatients with type II diabetes (245 men and 255 women) were selected by convenience sampling method in Tehran Shariati Hospital Clinics. 259 patients received drug treatment and 241 patients received insulin. Data collected by diabetes self-management scale and demographical questionnaire then analyzed by t test, ANOVA and Scheffe post hoc test.
Results: Self Management was significantly different based on sex, smoking behaviors, treatment type, marriage status, educational level, job status, insurance, life network, incomes and disease severity. Also most of the differences were significant in Scheffe post hoc test.
Conclusion: Diabetes Self Management behaviors are different on basis of social, demographical and disease factors. This result has clinical implications for clinicians and diabetic clinics. Based on this research and perform need assessment, priority action on programs of Self Management behaviors enrichment and improvement programs of Self Management behavior underlines (improvement of insurance, employment, income…) necessitate not only for diabetes associated harms reductions but also for society health promotion.
