Abstract

Introduction: The present study aimed to compare personality traits and attitude to suicide among two groups of people attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation and by consuming drugs.
Method: The research was descriptive and causal-comparative method. The statistical population included 80 individuals (40 people attempted to commit suicide by consuming drugs and 40 people attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation) whom were transferred to the hospital after committing suicide and were selected by convenience sampling method. In this study, NEO Personality Inventory and the Skin Suicide Attempt Questionnaire were used to collect data.
Results: Inferential analysis revealed that considering personality traits (Neuroticism, extraversion and agreeableness) there was significant difference between those who attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation and consuming drugs. However, no significant difference was found between these two groups with regard to attitude to suicide.
Conclusion: Since personality traits are considered as a risk factor for suicide so it seems necessary to pay more attention to them for understanding and preventing suicide.
